Lanark Post Office saved from closure

THE MAN in charge of the day-to-day running of Lanark Post Office appealed for calm this week from those fearful for its future.

And he called for customers to rally round the last surviving local service.

The message from Maqsood Din was "it's business as usual" despite staff and customers being told last week that the office would be shutting its doors - in what would have been the second sudden closure in just over a year.

However, the town's MSP is still demanding guarantees on the long term future of the the branch from Post Office bosses.

Mr Din confirmed that the 'temporary' sub postmaster put in place last April was eager to give up the position to concentrate on his own sub post office business outside Lanark.

He had given notice to Post Office Counters Ltd of his intention to leave last week but, following negotiations, agreed to stay on until a full time replacement sub-postmaster took over, probably in September.

Mr Din added: "We just want to restore people's confidence in the St Leonard Street branch and assure them they won't have to go to Carluke for their post office services."

However, Karen Gillon has sent a letter to postal service bosses, berating the organisation for leaving Lanark so exposed to losing its post office services.

She said: "I urge the Post Office to put in place a solution for Lanark as a matter of urgency."

A spokesman for Post Office Counters said it was committed to maintaining services in Lanark.
