THE date September 3, 2012 may go down in history as the day that Lanark started its fightback against years of decline as a market town.

For next Monday evening a crunch meeting has been called with the rallying cry going out to every shop, business, factory and office in the Royal Burgh: “If you really care about Lanark’s future – be there!”

The gathering at Wetherspoon’s Clydesdale Inn, starting at 5.30pm, should result in a re-born Lanark Business Group being formed to give town trade a single, united voice for the first time in a number of years.

Perhaps fittingly, the spokesman for the steering committee bringing the new group together is Alistair Brooks, the fifth generation of his family in local retail and running one of the few shops on the High Street to survive the last 40 years in family ownership.

He told the Gazette: “This town has never needed a proper business group more than it needs it now.

“And we are determined that it is going to keep its eyes fixed firmly ahead on the future of Lanark and not looking back to what went wrong, who was to blame or endless arguments over what-might-have-been.
