THE part-closure of the main road in and out of Lanark in the lead-up to Christmas could be the final straw for some of its town centre businesses.

That fear was expressed several times around the table at a meeting of the revived Lanark Business Group’s executive committee on Monday night.

Members decided to make an urgent and heartfelt plea to ScottishPower to give them –and the town – a break from disruptive roadworks in the vital shopping weeks of December.

The chairman of the Group, Alastair Brooks, told the meeting the stark facts as he saw them.

He said: “This Christmas is going to be make-or-break for some shops. If these works go ahead, it’s going to be break.”
