First Responders saves lives in Lesmahagow

LESMAHAGOW Community First Responders has only been active for a few months — but it is already helping emergency crews save lives.

Since the service began in April, 11 local responders have been called out to more than 30 patients and helped save the lives of a number of local residents.

The scheme is the first of its kind in Clydesdale and only the second in the West of Scotland.

First Responder James Simpson said: "We have managed to help quite a few patients and give them vital help before the ambulance crew arrived.

"Obviously there are some calls where we haven't been able to help but, overall, patients and their families have been very complimentary to us.

"There is no doubt that we have made a positive impact on the community."

First Responders are local volunteers, who are trained in basic life-saving skills and the use of medical equipment such as external defibrillators (shock boxes) to help patients suffering from cardiac arrest or other breathing problems.
