THE reluctant decision has been taken to close the 145-year-old Carnwath Parish Church, due to the huge costs involved in maintaining the Grade B listed building.

Congregation members have agreed unanimously that both the church – built in 1867 to a design by David Bryce – and church hall should be closed with a view to marketing the buildings.

A Church of Scotland spokeswoman said: “The cost of maintaining Carnwath Church has become too high for the congregation to bear and a substantial sum of money, in the region of £2 million, would be needed to bring it to the required standards.”
