COMMONWEALTH Games mascot Clyde, and hundreds of local school children turned out at the John Cumming Stadium on Sunday for the Carluke leg of the Queen’s baton relay.

“It was a great experience,” said Millar Stoddart, chairman of the Clydesdale Sports Council, who received a surprise last-minute invitation to carry the baton.

“The atmosphere in the John Cumming Stadium was fantasic. I think the response all over has been great.”

Police figures put the turnout in Carluke, in glorious warm sunshine, at 3500, and there was music and dance, and a chance to try out sports in taster sessions in the stadium before and after the baton arrived. It had earlier been carried through Lanark, and on leaving Carluke went to Law where, again, thousands were waiting.
