Christmas in Carluke a hit with shoppers

Planning starts for outdoor market

CARLUKE High Street's colourful Christmas celebrations proved a resounding success last weekend, with hundreds of people turning out to enjoy a day of fun and laughter.

One highlight was the appearance of Santa to spread some festive cheer in the town centre. And the added attractions of fairground rides, taped music and Christmas lights helped create a bustling town centre as people shopped for their last-minute presents.

The Carluke Development Trust experiment of staging Christmas celebrations in the High Street for the first time clearly worked.

Trust vice chairman Joey Adam reported high turnover in his electrical shop, with people snapping up plasma televisions.

''The weekend was a great success,'' Joey told the Gazette.

''There has never been anything like this in the town centre before. We did it this time to try and boost economy in the High Street.''

Joey thanked the contribution of the Trust's new development officer Mirka Ryjackova, whose idea it was for Carluke's fairground wonderland.

Mirka was this week back in the Czech Republic with her family, but will return to Scotland on January 14.

And Joey revealed that she has made plans to bring an outdoor market to Rankin Gait - along similar lines to Lanark's Christmas Market - within the next few months.

''We hope to have an event in spring, because Rankin Gait is made for that type of thing,'' he added.

''A market is possible, as the wide pavement there is ideal.

''We're planning on having the same stallholders as those at the Lanark Christmas Market.

''Mirka has made approaches to the folk who run the Lanark Market and they are quite keen.''

Mirka will leave her Carluke Development Trust post at the end of March, with Joey hopeful that replacements will be found via people co-opted from South Lanarkshire Council.
