Carluke’s Roadmeetings Hospital set to close

It has been on the cards for years, but now it has been confirmed: the town’s Roadmeetings Hospital is to close.
NHS Lanarkshire has confirmed that it will be shut by the end of March.
The hospital, which has served the Carluke area for 114 years, latterly caring for the elderly, has been subject to a number of cuts in recent years.
In 2004 Ward Two shut, with patients moved to Bellshill, and in recent years it has been left with only two wards.
Back in 2005 NHS Lanarkshire intended to replace Roadmeetings and Lanark’s Lockhart with a new community hospital but no plans for that have since materialised.
Then in 2010, recognising the building was at the end of its life, the NHS looked at constructing new wards either there or at Lockhart. But it did not have the money and the plans were quietly dropped.
By December 2011 Roadmeetings had only one ward, with nine patients, and, at its latest meeting, the NHS board heard that arrangements had now been made for them to go to Lockhart and Stonehouse.
