Carluke Somerfield jobs will not be lost despite takeover
JOBS at Carluke's Somerfield store will not be lost despite the store being taken over by another grocery chain.
The store, in Rankin Gait, is one of four stores in Scotland that will be sold, by Somerfield's new owners the Co-operative Group, to the newly formed Haldanes Stores.
However, the jobs of the 63 full and part-time staff at the store are secure, bringing relief to those involved.
The future of the store had been in doubt due to competition issues, identified by the Office of Fair Trading.
A spokeswoman for The Co-operative Group said: "The acquisition of the Somerfield chain by The Co-operative Group, which has now been completed, was subject to The Co-operative addressing local competition issues identified by the Office of Fair Trading in a small number of locations.
"The OFT identified Carluke as one of the locations where it had competition concerns.
"To meet the requirements of the OFT, the Somerfield store in Rankin Gait had to be sold as a going concern to another food retailer.
"I can confirm The Co-operative Group has agreed to sell The Co-operative to Haldanes."
