THOUSANDS of people – locals and visitors – gathered in Biggar on Hogmanay to see out 2013 at the annual bonfire.
Around 250 young people carried flaming torches in the procession, piped up the High Street by Biggar Pipe Band, to the site of the bonfire which had been growing steadily for weeks.
This year it was lit by senior citizen Tommy O’Donnell, assisted by the current Biggar Cornet Paul Scott.
Tommy (81) and his wife, who were members of the Gala Committee, started the Cornets Club in Biggar. For 16 years he was its formal chairman and he is an honorary member of the club.
His years of service to the town were reflected in his choice as the man to light the bonfire.
“I enjoyed it thoroughly,” he said. “It is a great thing to do.”
