Biggar Gala Day 2009

A SEA of smiling faces and people of all ages enjoying themselves... that sums up the 2009 Biggar Gala Day.

The event included a colourful parade through the town by the Queen's procession, bands, cornets on horseback, and floats with a variety of weird and wonderful characters.

And, happily, the day was mostly blessed with fine weather for the large crowds.

"Overall the day went very well," Gala committee secretary Kathryn Brotherstone said.

The sun shone brightly as Crowning Lady Christel Houston crowned Aileen Campbell Fleming Queen at the Municipal Hall.

Aileen was warmly applauded by the watching crowd, which included her proud parents Anna and Neil.

In a last minute addition to the ceremony, Cornet Elect Alan Watson — who broke his left hip after falling off his horse in an accident at West Linton — was sashed by Janette Whitefield.

Hobbling on crutches, Alan received the Burgh Standard for his safe keeping from 2008 Cornet Gordon Hamilton.

This sashing would have happened at Biggar Marches six days earlier, had Alan not ended up in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary after his fall.
