YOU could build a luxury, three-storey home for what South Lanarkshire Council said it would cost to rebuild Lanark Loch’s public toilets!

That was the incredulous reaction to the news that the council has been quoted up to £218,000 to replace the humble, single-storey lavatory at the lochside.

The rebuilding estimate has drawn allegations that the council is ‘gilding the lily’ on the costs to justify its decison to demolish the toilets.

The row over the lack of toilet facilities at what is now Lanark’s main visitor attraction has been rumbling on for over a year since the existing toilet block was closed down for being unsafe.

Initially, it was hoped that the council would rebuild the lavatories but it has now declared that this would be uneconomical.
