THE largest private employer in Lanark has announced plans to DOUBLE its workforce over the next five years, creating 150 new jobs.

The announcement that Border Biscuits hoped to take on the additional employees by 2018 was made by its managing director John Cunningham at a meeting discussing the town’s economic future.

With next year marking the 30th anniversary of the founding of the firm, now based at Caldwellside Industrial Estate, John said that it was poised to double its current 150-strong workforce, the second largest in Lanark after South Lanarkshire Council.

Speaking to a gathering of the recently-formed Lanark Heritage and Tourism Group, he pointed out that Border Biscuits already boasted an annual turnover of £13 million, supplied its products to every major supermarket chain and now sold two MILLION packets of biscuits per month.

John said: “Our vision is to fulfil our potential ...and that of the humble biscuit!”

He went on to state: “Our plans for the future are to become the No.1 premium biscuit brand in the United Kingdom, to achieve turnover of £30 million in the next five years, to increase our employee numbers to 300 and to generate local income of over £4 million.”
