LANARKIANS ranging from pipers to political party promoters will, from this week onward, be carrying on a centuries-long tradition by becoming Burgesses of the Royal Burgh.

Last year the town’s Community Council decided to restore, after a 40-year-long break, the annual conferring of a Burgess Ticket to citizens judged to have worked voluntarily for the good of the community.

Last year the first 12 new burgesses since the 1970s were chosen and the response to the relaunch of the ancient ‘good citizen’ award scheme was such that it was decided to carry on the traditon, hopefully for good.
