The recent weather tormented Douglas plant grower Tom Kirkland so much that, in the run-up to Scotland’s premier flower show, he actually took one of his plants from the greenhouse into the bedroom at night to keep the dampness from affecting its petals.

’The weather was a grower’s nightmare this year with a really hot spell in May followed by damp conditions,’ he said.

Tom retained the CM Jarvie Trophy - the Scottish Championship for geraniums and pelargoniums - he won last year in a hotly contested competition at Ayr last week.

Tom (pictured left with his partner Robert Barclay) brought home six trophies in total; he even won the Preserves Trophy for his jams and jellies.
