John McCafferty and Mary Sirrell met at the dancing in Law Village when John was 16 and Mary 15. They both lived in Unitas Crescent in Carluke, but at opposite ends of the street!

Romance blossomed and they were married five years later on November 25 1955, in the EU Congregational Church, Carluke, with a reception in the Welfare Hall.

John was working as a coal miner and Mary a “motor omnibus instructress”. They lived in Kirkfieldbank, then returned to Carluke.

John, 81, and Mary, 80, have kept active.
They were members of Castlehill Bowling Club where John still plays, and they are keen walkers and country dancers. They have two daughters, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Deputy Lieutenant Terry Currie and Provost Eileen Logan are pictured with Mary and John McCafferty
