A large field of nine teams, five with girls and four with boys, turned out on Sunday night in a bid to pull their way into the next rounds of the national Young Farmers Tug of War competition.

Lanarkshire clubs taking part were Biggar, Carluke, Avondale, and East Kilbride.

The Carluke team included Lanark and Lesmahagow, as there had been doubts whether the clubs could field suitably enthusiastic teams of six people, five and an anchor.

The clubs trained together, and then put out a
combined team.

Biggar, however, where tug-of-war is a highly popular sport, was able to field two teams in the
boys section.
