CARLUKE’S own marathon man Tom Conaghan is celebrating a double success – by being chosen to carry the Olympic Torch and finishing the London Marathon.

Tom (41) was selected to carry the torch after being nominated by his work colleagues at the William Grant Whisky Plant in Bellshill for his fantastic charity work over the past few years. In fact he has raised more than £20,000 for good causes in the past four years.

That total was boosted only last week as Tom raised £12,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support by running the London Marathon in 4hrs 18mins.

Tom said: “It’s a huge honour to be asked to carry the Olympic Torch.

“What’s even better is that I will be allowed to keep the torch afterwards because you are obviously lighting the next torch whose bearer then moves on.

“I was telling my three kids about the torch and the flame having never gone out and my youngest daughter Erin asked me who changes the batteries!”
