THE big push is on to turn Lanark’s glorious past into its biggest money-spinner of the future.

Exploiting the town’s rich heritage to transform its beleaguered economy was the subject of a summit meeting of important figures from local and national bodies beginning the work of drawing up a Lanark heritage and tourism masterplan.

At least two major television series about the town’s hero William Wallace are to be screened in 2014.

And there have recently been calls for the burgh to cash in on next year’s 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.

Now a Lanark Heritage and Tourism Group has been formed to make that ambition a hard reality.
