THE Heir to the Throne, Prince Charles, has been drawn into the battle over the planned quarrying of one of the Lanark area’s finest beautyspots.

As reported last week, South Lanarkshire Council controversially gave the go-ahead for the mining of 10 million tonnes of sand and gravel from the scenic Bonnington area between Lanark and New Lanark. Although there are hopes that the Scottish Government will step in and reverse the decision of environmental and heritage grounds, one local councillor opposed to the scheme has gone right to the very top - or, rather, second from the very top - of the nation to intervene.
