Retired farmer Joe McRobert is in training for a world championship – in sheepdog trials.

The 73-year-old has qualified for a place in the championships, to be held at Lowther Estate, near Penrith, later this month.

Joe, of Fingland, Biggar, will be competing with six-year-old sheepdog Taff.

“I’m quite confident,” he said. “My dogs are running well.”

He has just competed in the national championships at Jedburgh and was doing well, having the equivalent of a clear round, right to the last stage, when the dog gripped a sheep at the pen and was disqualified.

“It was one of the runs that you dream about having but at the last obstacle he gripped and that was that,” said Joe philosophically.

“It was a tremendous run but I was disqualified.”
