INNOCENT Lanark families could have died in an arson attack in the Smyllum area, an incident which could have been avoided if repeated warnings about the security of the flats there had been heeded.

This allegation was made by an angry mum following a late night fireraising incident at the Battismains block in the estate when four families had to be evacuated.

Their homes were filled with noxious smoke after mindless yobs set fire to the communal ground floor bin area.

Just two years ago the Gazette ran a story about residents’ fears of just such a thing happening at another block in the Smyllum area.
