A LIVING and permanent memorial has been created to a 12 year old Lanark girl who lost her long battle against cancer in May.
Many have been inspired by the courage shown by Kim Gardner during her four year struggle against the disease, not least how much she achieved during her final years.
Indeed, a reflection of the way in which she faced the disease was the fact that Kim continued her education right up to the very week of her death.
This feat of determination was celebrated at a very special ceremony held at her school, Hamilton College, last week when a cherry tree was planted in her memory and as a source of inspiration to her fellow pupils.
Kim began Hamilton College in the J1 class of its Junior School and quickly became a popular pupil. She went on to excel academically and threw herself into the school's extracurricular life, including membership of its JAM (Jesus and Me) Club and Girls Brigade.
Her popularity was reflected in her election by her peers as president of the Pupil Council. Despite not having her own troubles to seek, she also helped others fit into the college by becoming a 'Buddy' pupil counsellor to whom younger pupils could turn to for advice.
The college decided that something remarkable would have to be done to mark Kim's passing.
Therefore, last week the special tree-planting ceremony was held in the school grounds, carried out by Kim's wee brother Adam (8) and close friends Shaun Kerr (12) and Sarah Kerr (10) also from Lanark.
The ceremony was held following a special service in the school assembly hall where Kim's parents, David and Elaine Gardner, were presented with a handmade book of memories of Kim compiled by her classmates and staff.
They also received a cheque from the college Yearbook Committee for £500 as a donation to the childrens hospice, Robin House, where Kim spent the last few months of her life.
The plaque at the base of the tree in her memory reads: "In memory of our friend Kim Gaynor Gardner, 6th January, 1996 — 21st May, 2008. An
inspirational student. A shining example of courage and grace."
Kim's parents issued a statement afterwards, praising "the comfort and support provided to both Kim and ourselves over the prolonged period of her illness by the staff and pupils of Hamilton College."
