The museum was shut for months while work was carried out and now the improvements are visible at both ends of the scale.

For children, for the first time, there is a special corner kitted out with period costumes, old toys to play with and a time line to follow.

There is also a grafitti board for their thoughts while their comments, strung up on pieces of paper on another wall, reveal what they enjoyed most about their visit.

Trustee Ann Matheson said: "Some teenagers may have a negative view of museums, but if you give kids a really good experience of museums when they are young, they will come back."

And for the older visitors there is a new archive section, with old newspapers, scrapbooks and reference books galore, as well as thousands of old photographs.

Moat Park is open from 11am until 4.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and from 2pm until 4.30pm on Sundays.
