ONLY months after bringing out an acclaimed book on Biggar’s Home Front in World War One, local historian Ann Mathieson has produced yet another excellent record in words and pictures of our past.

This time she concentrates on Old Broughton, Drumelzier, Manor Stobo and Tweedsmuir in a wonderful collection of old photos from communities neighbouring her Biggar home.

As ever in a Stenlake publication, each photograph is accompanied by a very well-reasearched text, the content of which often holds surprises even for those who think they have known the area well for years.

For example, those passing Broughton Place on the outskirts of that village may well have thought that this was an ancient Scottish Borders castle.

Not so; Ann reveals that the building is less than a century old, having been built just before World War Two!

Old Broughton, Drumelzier, Manor Stobo and Tweedsmuir costs £9 and is available in local shops or via Stenlake Publishing, 54-58 Mill Square, Catrine, KA5 6RD.
