Laird of Lesmahagow launches new tapestry
THE Laird of Lesmahagow, Baron Sirdar Iqbal Singh, officially launched the Scottish diaspora tapestry at a special function in Edinburgh.
Baron Singh (80), a retired Sikh businessman who has lived in his Lesmahagow castle for 25 years, said: “It was a great honour that I was chosen to do the launch.
“It was really nice to hear one of the organisers saying: ‘Mr Singh, you are the star of the show’!”
The Scottish Diaspora Tapestry, which has been boosted by £80,000 from Creative Scotland and £60,000 from the Scottish government, is being planned by the group behind the Battle of Prestonpans tapestry.
It is being embroidered by volunteers from communities around the world where Scots have settled over the centuries.
Among the images displayed within the tapestry will be the works of Robert Burns, which will be particularly interesting to Mr Singh.
