Lanark Het Pint 2014 Slideshow

THERE was a rousing cheer for John Barrie, Lanark’s latest recipient of the MBE, when he was welcomed to the Het Pint on New Year’s Day.

The 80-year-old badminton ace was one of 41 pensioners to claim a crisp Scottish £1 note.

Welcoming a good turnout, Leonard Gray explained that the Het Pint had evolved from a 17th century trust fund set up to help scholars.

“It developed into the giving of hot ale to those who required some warmth and kindness on New Year’s Day,” he said.

Since 1978 Lanark Community Council has been organising it, presenting £1 notes to senior members of the community.
