ONE of Lanark’s newest but most emotional traditions carried on at the town’s Roman Catholic cemetery on Saturday.

It began almost ten years ago when it was realised that over 100 children who had died in the former Smyllum Orphanage during its century in existence were lying in unmarked graves.

A group, including several of the former Smyllum orphans, started a campaign to have a memorial created to these children at the graveyard and, with financial help from the order of nuns who formerly ran the orphanage, a stone was erected in memory of these `lost children’.

Every year since then there has been a memorial service in their honour at the stone and this year saw one of the largest turnouts to date with folk coming from throughout Scotland to pay their tributes in prayers and flowers.

For more information on this story, see this week’s Carluke and Lanark Gazette which is in the shops now.
