DESPITE suffering a broken leg at the end of last year former SPL executive chairman Lex Gold CBE was determined to run his stint of the Olympic Torch Relay.

Lex, who was running his stretch in Falkirk last Wednesday, was taking part in the relay due to his work with Buckinghamshire-based charity The Pace Centre, which supports his grandson who has cerebral palsy.

And the enthusiastic energy of the cheering crowds who lined the streets will stay with him forever.

The 71-year-old, who lives in Braidwood, said: “The crowd was absolutely enormous; my leg began outside Falkirk College and there were plenty of college kids there as well as whole families.

“It was a great atmosphere and the people of Falkirk really came out and supported the Torch relay.

“Although I was only carrying the Torch for a short distance I was determined to run it and I was pleased that I was able to do that.

“I made the police escort do a bit of running!”
